Australian startup All G has introduced its precision-fermented, bovine-equivalent lactoferrin in the United States, AgFunderNews reported. The company is holding domestic inventory for US customers and is targeting supplements, functional foods and sports-nutrition products.
The product’s distinguishing feature is its apo state, meaning that relatively little iron occupies the protein’s binding sites. A literature review published by Foods in 2022 explained that iron loading affects lactoferrin’s structure and properties, while concluding that its bioactive potential should be evaluated with the intended recipient group in mind. All G says reduced saturation strengthens mechanisms associated with iron management, intestinal health and immune support.
Chief scientific officer Jared Raynes told AgFunderNews that the product has iron saturation below 5%, protein content above 93%, purity exceeding 95% and heparin binding above 95%. Chief executive Jan Pacas told the publication that manufacturing has reached 60,000-liter capacity with favorable unit economics at prevailing dairy-derived lactoferrin prices. AgFunderNews reported that conventional lactoferrin can cost more than $650 per kilogram because extracting it from milk is expensive.
The performance and scale figures remain company-reported. AgFunderNews said All G has received an FDA letter that raised no questions about its GRAS conclusion for bovine lactoferrin, while the Foods review noted that bovine lactoferrin has been permitted as a food ingredient in the European Union since 2012. The review also found that food use remained limited despite broader pharmaceutical and cosmetics applications.
