Food Standards Australia New Zealand has invited public comments on Application A1341, a request to allow cell-cultured duck for use as an ingredient. In a notice dated 16 July 2026, FSANZ made clear that the consultation is part of its review rather than an authorization.
FSANZ said responses from stakeholders will contribute to its evaluation. The regulator will examine that material before determining whether the proposed ingredient should receive permission.
According to FSANZ, this is its second assessment concerning a cell-cultured food. The agency said cell-cultured quail was authorized in 2025. Separately, the FSANZ Consumer Insights Tracker found that as many as 53% of surveyed people in Australia and New Zealand had not encountered the term cell-cultured food.
The application’s outcome remains unsettled, and FSANZ said comments must be lodged by 22 July 2026. The review takes place under Australia and New Zealand’s updated food code provisions, which FSANZ said were introduced after the earlier quail approval and cover manufacturing, marketing and product labels.
